TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONAL FIREARMS USERS

WMS regularly provides firearms training, consultancy services and ‘train the trainer’ inputs for professional firearms users who carry or use firearms in the course of their work. Professional training in this area is vital; without it actions or incidents may be legally unsupportable.

WMS provides professional firearms training for the following organisations and individuals:

  • Zoos, wildlife parks and zoo-keepers
  • Arctic expedition companies and guides
  • Safari and wildlife tourism companies and guides
  • Television companies and films crews
  • Airports and airfields and associated staff
  • Conservation organisations and conservation site staff
  • Ballistics engineering and testing companies
  • Police constabularies (large mammal despatch)
  • Government departments

WMS has provided professional training around the UK for a variety of organisations, and has also recently provided training in Svalbard, Guernsey and Alderney and South Africa.

We offer a specialised one- or two-day (or longer if required) bespoke training package, designed to meet your specific requirements, including a classroom/lecture input and a practical live-fire input on the range that cover the use of firearms for animal control, management, and emergency responses. A one day input and/or refresher training is also available depending on client requirements and experience. This training can be provided at our facilities in mid Wales or at your own suitable site in the UK or overseas.

Our two-day training packages includes an intensive lecture day followed by a practical live-fire shooting day. The lecture input can include but is not limited to topics such as: legal issues, risk assessment, choice of firearm/calibre/ammunition, emergency response scenarios and protocols, team work, staff and client safety.

The practical live-fire shooting day can include but is not limited to: safe use of firearms, effective firearms handling, zeroing/sighting in, marksmanship principles and skills, trigger control, sight picture and target acquisition, reload and follow up, use of open sights and optics, emergency drills, teamwork drills.

The training package will be customised to clients’ specific needs depending on operational requirements, staff experience and area of work. Course costs include full insurance, use of all firearms and associated equipment, all ammunition, refreshments , handouts and information sheets.

Certificates of competency are provided to those that pass the course and are accepted by employers, NGOs, insurers and governments as proof of training and skill.

Consultancy

We can also provide onsite consultancy for your organisation to help you determine best practice operations, training requirements, equipment requirements and also provide advice on applying for firearms and shotgun certificates with the correct conditions to enable you to meet your practical and legal responsibilities.

Consultancy can also be undertaken on setting up a training range area, or professional/commercial shooting range that includes land safety evaluation, liaising with local authorities and police, establishing safe arcs of fire and danger areas, understanding backstops, understanding ricochet potential and risk mitigation, target layouts and managing steel target range environments.

Train the trainer

We’re often asked to train people who will go on to train others within their organisation. Training can be on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis for management, or groups of 3-8 people for whole team training. Please contact us for more information on this aspect of our services.
